The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia handed down the conviction to the 25-year old Gitarts on Thursday. He also faces, beyond the 5-year jail sentence, 3 years probation, full restitution, and a $250,000 fine.

Gitarts was a member of the APC from 2003 to 2004 it is believed, and received payments from the leader of the piracy group for running a server in Texas.

The server allowed users to download and upload all types of pirated music, games, software, and movies. The APC is believed to be one of the big groups out there, responsible for the initial release of a great deal of pirated content which is then distributed by others on the Internet.

Google will join Facebook and MySpace, which launched ways to port user data to partner sites this week. Facebook Connect will provide the hooks to let users port their friends, profile photos, events, and other data across the Web to partner sites.

I saved the most important for last. If you want to do well on any search engine, especially Google, linking is THE single MOST important thing you can do. It’s that simple.

Here are the five things you MUST do to make your site #1 on Google:

A.) Find the highest page rank sites linking to your site AND your competitors’ sites.

B.) Run monthly link campaigns and snatch up the best of the above identified Web sites.

C.) Run regular checks on what pages are still linking back to your site. Alsomake sure they did not move you from a high page rank page to a lower one (don’t get cheated!)

D.) Eliminate any penalized sites you link to; ASAP!

E.) Check your search engine ranking AND your competitor’s for each of your keywords every week. Do this, at the minimum, for Google, Yahoo, MSN and Alta Vista.

Inside Tip: Keeping up can be a lot of work so a lot of SEO Consultants (myself included) use SEO Elite (http://www.SEOeliteWeb.com) to do all the most difficult and time consuming work.

There’s one more very important thing to know; Google was originally a Ph.D. student’s project and was created for the sole purpose of defining a Web site’s value by the sites that link to it. Twelve years later this is still it’s main job. Linking is EVERYTHING to Google.

These few SEO tips are the very best of the best so use them wisely. Best of luck!

(In no particular order)

You’ve almost rear-ended the car in front of you because you were analyzing a font on a billboard.

You get pissed when a free Photoshop brush you download is less than 1000px in size.

You’d rather study the paisley pattern on your boyfriend/girlfriend’s shirt than listen to what he/she has to say.

You can use keyboard shortcuts at light speed, blindfolded, but you can’t type a paragraph of text without staring at the keyboard.

You’ve had “Software Nightmares,” when you’ve been working way too much.

You consider meals interruptions.

You’ve learned your lesson and stopped using the word “final” in any file name when saving.

You clean your keyboard more often than you wash your car.

You’ve intentionally given up trying to explain your projects to non-designers.

You see CMYK and RGB like Neo sees the Matrix.

You’d rather organize your desktop than your sock drawer.

When you heard that Adobe was acquiring Macromedia, you had a Design Orgasm.

When you look at Album art all you see are grunge Photoshop Brushes. (Then you see the album art a couple minutes later)

You’ve Photoshopped out a watermark for a comp or mock-up.

You’ve actually $paid for a font.

You’ve totally slaughtered a great design concept because the client thinks he/she knows best. (everyone thinks they are a designer)

The amount of words you’ve written with a sharpie labeling burned discs total more than the amount of words you’ve read in novels.

You’ve had to explain to a client that a layered file wasn’t part of the deal.

You’ve kept a ragged concert ticket just so you could scan it.

You’ve nicknamed the OSX spinning wheel. (and not affectionately)

You bookmark a resource more often than you have a fun night out on the town.

You’ve intentionally overbid a project because you can sniff out a bad client from a mile away.

You can’t go to a restaurant without secretly critiquing the menu design.

You have an amazingly huge font collection, and an amazingly short temper.

If you had a penny for every mouse click, you would have been a trillionaire 3 years ago
